The Art Of Seeing

An Art for Everyman

"Photography suits the temper of this age - of active bodies and minds. It is a perfect medium for one whose mind is teeming with ideas, imagery, for a prolific worker who would be slowed down by painting or sculpting, for one who sees quickly and acts decisively, accurately." - Edward Weston

In our life we are always in search of some means to express ourselves creatively. Photography is one such medium of expression.

  • Photography can be pursued as a profession or as a hobby.
  • Besides the creative aspect of it, today photography has become an all important tool of communication in all fields of work.
  • A few relevant images with a caption displace long text reports with very little or no text required.
  • Computerization, digital cameras and transmission of digital files through Internet / Intranet has made photography a much more powerful tool than ever before, as it has become near instant and it can be effectively used by all :
    • -  exporters
    • - marketing executives
    • - all engineering disciplines in their day to day use
    • - real estate builders, dealers and promoters
    • - journalists / travel writers
    • - students of all disciplines as it would help them later in their career
    • - people engaged in the field of social rehabilitation work
    • - environmentalists
    • - archeologists
    • - astronomy
    • - crime management and forensic work
    • - medical practitioners and,
    • - people engaged in any kind of research work
    • - and if one just gives a thought to its possible uses, one would find endless use of photography in today's world.

With me one learns the basics of using an analog or digital camera to record pictures as one visualises, understanding available and artificial light, correct exposures, selective focusing, using an image editing software.

"The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera." - Dorthea Lange

Guidance to "The Art of Seeing" and Composing - isolating photographic subject matter to record.

"It takes a lot of imagination to be a good photographer. You need less imagination to be a painter because you can invent things. But in photography everything is so ordinary; it takes a lot of looking before you learn to see the extraordinary." - David Bailey

After comprehending the basics I help in directional guidance to one's specific personal or professional use.

One to one or in small groups of maximum five persons at a time is my preference of going about it with duration of 10 to 15 classes of 2 hours each spread over a month and a half period. In case of class spreads over 2 hours I do have the right to adjust the extra time from the total time frame. The student /s will have to organise a model / a subject for their practical sessions involving fashion / portraiture.

Meet me in person after taking an appointment, will provide you with more details. Bring along prints and negatives of what ever you may have shot anytime before for an assessment, as it helps me build on what you know. The main aim is to change the mind set of just clicking pictures to more creative thoughtful photography.

One needs to have ones own camera kit. If in doubt about the suitability of a camera you may have, do bring it along in your first meeting.

One requires a basic starting kit - SLR or Digital camera with manual functions, a tripod and a portable flash.

A few notable quotes to stir the mind

  • It is part of the photographer's job to see more intensely than most people do. He must have and keep in him something of the receptiveness of the child who looks at the world for the first time or of the traveler who enters a strange country. - Bill Brandt
  • Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again. - Henri Cartier-Bresson
  • The creative act lasts but a brief moment, a lightning instant of give-and-take, just long enough for you to level the camera and to trap the fleeting prey in your little box. - Henri Cartier-Bresson
  • To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event. - Henri Cartier-Bresson
  • To take photographs means to recognize - simultaneously and within a fraction of a second - both the fact itself and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that give it meaning. It is putting one's head, one's eye and one's heart on the same axis. - Henri Cartier-Bresson
  • Experience is the best teacher of all. And for that, there are no guarantees that one will become an artist. Only the journey matters. - Harry Callahan
  • A hundredth of a second here, a hundredth of a second there - even if you put them end to end, they still only add up to one, two, perhaps three seconds, snatched from eternity. - Robert Doisneau
  • We are only beginning to learn what to say in a photograph. The world we live in is a succession of fleeting moments, any one of which might say something significant. - Alfred Eisenstaedt
  • Whether he is an artist or not, the photographer is a joyous sensualist, for the simple reason that the eye traffics in feelings, not in thoughts. - Walker Evans
  • You do your work as a photographer and everything becomes past. Words are more like thoughts; the photographer's picture is always surrounded by a kind of romantic glamour - no matter what you do, and how you twist it. - Robert Frank
  • I am not interested in shooting new things - I am interested to see things new. - Ernst Haas
  • Everything is a subject. Every subject has a rhythm. To feel it is the raison detre. The photograph is a fixed moment of such a raison detre, which lives on in itself. - Andre Kertesz
  • There is only you and your camera. The limitations in your photography are in yourself, for what we see is what we are. - Ernst Haas
  • There are no rules and regulations for perfect composition. If there were we would be able to put all the information into a computer and would come out with a masterpiece. We know that's impossible. You have to compose by the seat of your pants. - Arnold Newman
  • The camera can be the most deadly weapon since the assassin's bullet. Or it can be the lotion of the heart. - Norman Parkinson
  • You can show - with a camera you can show things that you like about the universe, things that you hate about the universe. - Gordon Parks
  • Anything that excites me for any reason, I will photograph; not searching for unusual subject matter, but making the commonplace unusual. - Edward Weston

Hands on practical photography guidance to students of Fashion Design Department, National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi during a Fashion Module. I let the students experiment with the placement of studio lights, poses, expressions and previewed their shots with them on the monitor, pointed out any follies and suggested corrections for the same. This was again a fun filled session as communication was kept very simple and open. Queries were answered spontaneously and shown practically. The comfort level and the freedom of participation can be gauged from the images displayed.
Photography and styling by students; and modeled by a co-student.
